New insect hotel at Eastcott Referrals
Eastcott Referrals has announced the creation of an insect hotel as part of the hospital’s biodiversity projects.
Eastcott’s ‘Green Team’ will lead the renovation project, which involved creating a green space outside of the practice, to be enjoyed by both staff and insects. Following the practice’s ongoing sustainability aims, the garden was designed to include bright planting of flowers, a herb garden and an insect hotel.
Jasmine Kilpatrick, Emergency and Critical Care Nurse at Eastcott, was the mastermind behind the project and was responsible for drawing up plans and implementing sustainable changes in the practice.
Commenting on the changes, she said: “I’ve had personal struggles with mental health in the past and found that being outside and gardening really made a positive difference to my stress levels, anxiety and mental wellbeing.
“I wanted to share this experience with everyone at the hospital, particularly with those who don’t necessarily have a garden of their own to retreat to after a hard day’s labour.
“Our line of work can be quite strenuous and mentally draining, so it’s incredibly important to be able to take a few minutes every day to get some fresh air outside.”

The referral hospital created its ‘Green Team’ in 2020, comprised of a group of team members who work together to reduce the hospital’s environmental impact.
The garden currently grows herbs which members of the practice can use instead of buying from the supermarket, one of the efforts to reduce their carbon footprint.
Future plans for the garden include installing bird boxes and water baths to encourage more biodiversity to the area. The practice also hopes to create more seating areas to allow staff and patients to enjoy.
