Ophthalmology surgery success at Eastcott Referrals
13 year old Murphy underwent correct surgery on both eyes at Eastcott Veterinary Referrals in Swindon.
After the initial consultation and diagnosis, the Linneaus-owned Eastcott team carried out a keratectomy and Gunderson graft to stabilise the corneal endothelial dystrophy in both eyes.
The procedure was led by Eastcott’s head of ophthalmology and advanced practioner Ida Gilbert, who explained: “Murphy was referred to us with a history of recurrent and chronic ulceration in both eyes. He presented with blepharospasm, mild corneal oedema in the left eye and moderate oedema and haze in the right eye. A full ophthalmic examination revealed corneal endothelial dystrophy with secondary bullous keratopathy and multiple ulcers in both eyes.”
The team used the Gunderson graft, replacing the scarred cornea with a thin conjunctival graft, which Murphy responded well to. Through his recovery his ocular discomfort has resolved, and he has retained good overall vision with no recurrence of ulcers postsurgery.
Murphy’s owner, Clare Dodswell, had praise for the ophthalmology team at Eastcott and said, “Murphy’s eyes were in a poor state, and he was in a lot of pain. He’s an older dog and we didn’t want him to suffer. I was bowled over by how amazing the staff at Eastcott were, especially when operating in the midst of the Covid pandemic.
“I can’t praise everyone enough. They have a great team at Eastcott and Ida was quite extraordinary.”
Eastcott Veterinary Referrals also offers services in cardiology, dentistry, internal medicine, oral and maxillofacial surgery, oncology, orthopaedics, soft tissue surgery, laparoscopy, thoracoscopy, diagnostic imaging, anaesthesia and analgesia and has its own emergency and critical care centre.
