Cumbrian animal hospital invests in advanced imaging equipment

A leading Cumbrian animal hospital has invested almost £250,000 in state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment to ensure they remain at the forefront of veterinary care.

Linnaeus-owned Kentdale Referrals, in Milnthorpe, Cumbria, delivers specialist-led orthopaedic, spinal and soft tissue services and the new advanced technology will help in accurately identifying serious conditions, illnesses and infections, along with aiding the team to devise best treatments.

Jan Beranek, European Specialist in Small Animal Surgery at Kentdale, will be one of the skilled team using the new equipment and said the investment provided a clear indication of the hospital’s drive and determination to offer the highest quality of care across the region.

He said: “We are excited to say we have taken a significant step forward in enhancing our impressive diagnostic imaging services.

“As part of our commitment to providing patients, clients and referring vets with the best possible care, we have installed a new state-of-the-art 32-slice GE Fixed Revolution ACT, a high-specification CT scanner.

“Our specialist-led team will use the scanner to acquire images of exceptional quality as it has the ability to capture multiple slices simultaneously, guaranteeing patient safety and the most accurate diagnoses.”

The £200,000 scanner is a major addition to the industry-leading facilities at Kentdale and will be augmented by two other key investments – a nanoscope and an electric pen drive.

Jan added: “The NanoScope™ operative arthroscopy imaging system is a compact single-use 1.9mm camera system.

“It’s chip-on-tip system combines the latest technology in 1mm imaging sensors, LED lighting, image management, and integration with an intuitive touchscreen control tablet.

“A key advantage is it is portable and easy to use, allowing our surgeons to perform minimally invasive arthroscopy or endoscopy during preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative investigations.

“For instance, its direct visualising provides an important alternative to MRI imaging of the biceps tendon tear in the shoulder, meniscal tear in the stifle and second-look arthroscopy (staging of osteoarthritis).

“The system also offers precise, direct image-guided visualisation of injections and the small camera size is ideal for nasal endoscopy in cats and small, breed dogs.

“As the name suggests, our Electric Pen Drive is a universal, modular pen-shaped surgical power tool system which will be used in the treatment of our neurosurgical and orthopaedic patients.

“This new power tool is lightweight, so will maximise a surgeon’s comfort and control, reducing the risks during complicated procedures performed in the spinal canal and smallest bones of our pet patients.

“With its wide range of attachments and versatile foot or hand control options, it can be easily customised to fit the requirements of technically demanding surgical procedures.”
