RCVS Fellow Mark Owen joins Cave Veterinary Specialists

Mark Owen, who became a Fellow of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons this year in recognition of his ‘meritorious contribution to clinical practice’, has joined Linnaeus-owned Cave Veterinary Specialists in Somerset.

Mark is also an ambassador for AOVet, the global network of surgeons, scientists and other professionals who specialise in veterinary surgery of the musculoskeletal system.

Cave’s co-clinical director Nele Van den Steen said: “We’re delighted to welcome Mark to Cave and know his expertise will make him a tremendous addition to our specialist-led orthopaedic team.

“He is working at the cutting edge of advanced orthopaedic surgery and will help expand the level and scope of the quality treatment we provide for our patients and referring vets.”

Mark said: “Cave has a superb team of specialists so I’m thrilled to be joining such a quality line-up.

“I have an active interest in fracture repair, arthroscopic surgery for joint disease and the ongoing development of the tibial tuberosity advancement (TTA) procedure for management of cranial cruciate ligament injury.

“I’m looking forward to putting this knowledge to good use alongside my new colleagues.”

The TTA procedure stems from his work with AOVet, to which he was elected in 2004, later joining its UK national faculty team in 2014 to help train the next generation of small animal orthopaedic surgeons.

Mark is a well-known figure in West Country veterinary circles after graduating from the University of Bristol in 1987, working as a lecturer at the university in 1995 and setting up his own referral centre in the area.

He also enjoys a close association with Kyon, which provides veterinary implants, instruments and custom solutions for orthopaedic cases.

Cave Veterinary Specialists offers comprehensive, specialist-led services in anaesthesia, cardiology, dermatology, internal medicine, neurology and neurosurgery, oncology, orthopaedic surgery, pain management and rehabilitation and soft tissue surgery.
