Arboretum and PDSA launch Paws for Remembrance event

PDSAThe Arboretum and PDSA – the UK’s leading veterinary charity – are inviting dog owners to share the love with their four-legged friends on Valentine’s Day, Sunday February 14, by taking part in a 5k walk around the Arboretum,

The 150-acre Arboretum is located at Croxall Road, Alrewas, Staffordshire, and the ‘Paws for Remembrance’ walks will take place between 10.00am – 4.00pm. A donation of £5 is suggested to take part and advance booking is required.

During the walk, there will be opportunities to view many of the 300 memorials, which pay tribute to those who have served and continue to serve our country. Volunteers will be on hand to provide more information about the Arboretum and the memorials during the walk.

PDSA vet nurses will also be available during the day to provide free wellbeing MOTs for dogs, and to answer visitors’ questions about their pets.

PDSA will also show videos featuring its Animal Awards Programme, which comprises its three globally recognised medals, including the PDSA Dickin Medal. This has been awarded 65 times since its institution in 1943 and honours animals for gallantry in military conflict.

There will be some fantastic, family friendly activities to take part in too, including the chance for visitors to make their own medal. The Arboretum’s restaurant will also be open throughout the day to purchase refreshments.

Community & Education head nurse Sue Bartlett said: “We know people love their pets and want the best for them, which is why we’re here to help. By offering free, friendly advice and support, we can help owners make small changes that can make a big difference to the health and happiness of their pets.ARB

“We are delighted to team up with the Arboretum. As well as looking after our four-legged friends and holding lots of fun and interactive games for all ages, we’ll have details about recipients of our Dickin Medal, which is recognised worldwide as the animal equivalent of the Victoria Cross.”

Sarah Montgomery, Managing Director of the Arboretum, said: “We are pleased to partner with PDSA to encourage dog owners to try our specially designated dog-walking route around the Arboretum on Valentine’s Day.

“We always try to be as inclusive as possible and this event provides an innovative way in which dog walkers can pay their respects to the fallen whilst ensuring the utmost respect for the memorials and trees in our 150-acre site.”
