National Pet Month calls for more to get involved
In its 25th year of supporting pet related charities in the UK, chairman of trustees, Phil Sketchley is looking to motivate vets and their practices to get involved.
Speaking at this year’s BVSA Congress, Phil emphasised the work that the charity does, acting as the lynch pin between other charities and vet practices themselves.
Phil told delegates about the marketing and PR support practices receive but emphasised that if they are looking to hold a fundraising event, they need to register online first at www.nationalpetmonth.org.uk so they can receive all that they need to alert the local press. “We really want to motivate vets to get involved,” he said.
“Not only does it help to raise money for worthy causes that they can choose themselves but by holding a fundraising event and opening practice doors to the public they give pet owners the chance to see the professionalism and care that goes on behind the scenes. It’s great for local awareness,” he added.
In addition, Phil was keen to get vets talking to schools. He said it was a real call to arms and has demonstrated tangible benefits. He said: “In one particular school there were about 20 per cent of children with pets at home.
“Within three months of a vet giving a talk to the children that figure raised to a staggering 67 per cent. That in turn delivers greater footfall and more business for the profession.”
Phil also reminded the audience that they are not a competing charity. Other than administration and general running costs every penny raised goes onto worthy causes. Recipients in recent times include Petsavers and Hounds for Heroes.
