Harry Meade’s mare Cavalier Crystal wins the Twemlows Burghley scholarship for the fourth year running
The impressive mare, Cavalier Crystal, owned by Harry Meade has once again won the Twemlows Burghley scholarship at this year’s Defender Burghley Horse Trials. The award is annually presented to the highest placed British domiciled mare to finish in the top 20, and for the fourth year in a row, Cavalier Crystal is the winner after the pair finished in overall 10th place. The scholarship provided by Twemlows Stud Farm, one of the UK’s leading reproductive centres, generously consists of two embryo transfers at Twemlows, to support breeding of elite British mares.
Twemlows have been running the scholarship in partnership with Defender Burghley Horse Trials for 18 years. The objective being to encourage home-grown breeding of elite mares competing at the top of their game, at their optimum breeding age, without interrupting their competitive career.
Managing Partner, Edward Matson, explains, “Embryo transfer is an advanced reproductive technique that involves the donor mare being inseminated and the embryo being transferred to the recipient mare who carries the foal to term. At Twemlows we have a highly skilled veterinary team, who manage the whole reproductive process from synchronisation, to flushing and transferring the embryos. This allows competing mares, or those who can’t safely carry the foal themselves to be bred from without pausing their competitive schedule or putting them at risk. We are home to one of the largest recipient mare herds in the country, so we can carefully match the recipient mare to the donor mare.”
Harry Meade once again takes the award which has previously been presented to world class eventers such as Mary King, Piggy Frenche and Jonelle Price.
