Professor Jonathan Elliott of the Royal Veterinary College awarded Honorary Member of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine

Jonathan Elliott, Professor of Veterinary Clinical Pharmacology at the Royal Veterinary College (RVC), has been awarded Honorary Member status in Small Animal Internal Medicine by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM).

The ACVIM is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to improving the lives of animals and people through education and training, new medical knowledge, and public awareness of advances in veterinary medical care. The ACVIM is the international certifying organisation for veterinary specialists in cardiology, large animal internal medicine, neurology, nutrition, oncology and small animal internal medicine. It has more than 3,000 members worldwide.

Professor Elliott was nominated for the international award by fellow Professor at the RVC, Harriett Syme, who is a Professor of Small Animal Internal Medicine, alongside many of his other former PhD students who currently work in academia or specialist practice. The ACVIM awarded Professor Elliott the membership in recognition of his distinguished and remarkable service to the veterinary profession.

Professor Elliott has been an academic at the RVC for 32 years. For 16 of these, he served as Vice Principal for Research and Innovation, taking responsibility for the institution’s research strategy and preparing three consecutive Research Excellence Framework (REF) submissions. Each submission saw the RVC significantly increase its international standing with 88% of its research rated as internationally excellent or world-class in 2021. Professor Elliott has since returned to the RVC, following a 12-month sabbatical to focus on clinically applied research and teaching.

Throughout his career, Professor Elliott has been awarded the Pfizer Academic Award (1998) for research contributions to the pathophysiology of laminitis along with several recognitions for his clinical research contributions in the area of feline chronic kidney disease. This includes the BSAVA Amoroso Award (2001); the PetPlan Scientific Award (2005); the European Society of Nephrology and Urology Award (2007); and the BSAVA Woodrow Award (2019).

Professor Elliott is a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology (ECVPT) and was President from 2018 to 2021. He is also a Fellow of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, a member of the International Renal Interest Society, secretary to the PetPlan Charitable Trust Scientific Committee and a panel member of the UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship scheme. He served for eight years as a member of the Veterinary Products Committee (2001-2009), six years on BBSRC’s Studentships and Fellowships Panel and is currently a member of the Animal Plant Health Agency scientific advisory board.
