EU recognises nutrition as an effective solution for managing feline hyperthyroidism

Hill's YD imageWe all know that eating the right food can contribute to a healthier and happier life for our pets, but can nutrition really be effective in managing disorders? European legislation increasingly acknowledges this to be the case by amending its legal framework. Nutrition plays one of the key roles in pets’ recovery and has now been officially recognised as important in cases of feline hyperthyroidism.

The European Union has recently updated the regulation that amends the list of intended uses of foods for particular nutritional purposes by adding hyperthyroidism to the list. The new regulation acknowledges a connection between reduction of iodine levels in food and the management of hyperthyroidism in cats, giving vets the option of managing these cats through nutritional methods. Hill’s Pet Nutrition has been actively engaged in continuous research in this area and has proved that iodine restricted food can manage the complex disorder of hyperthyroidism on its own. Hill’s clinical studies positively contributed to the decision of the responsible EU Standing Committee.

Irina Chernikova, PhD, Regulatory Affairs Manager EMEA at Hill’s Pet Nutrition, said: “We are pleased that the new EU regulation acknowledges the fact that nutrition can play an effective role in managing hyperthyroidism in cats. Hill’s™ Prescription Diet™ y/d™ Feline is a breakthrough product that really makes a difference to the life of veterinary practitioners and their patients. y/dhas already been on the market for one and a half years, and has proven to be an effective and innovative tool for managing hyperthyroidism in cats.”

y/d™ is the first and only clinically proven nutrition to manage thyroid health in cats when fed as the sole source of nutrition without medication, radioactive iodine therapy or surgery.

Vets in the UK also recognise y/d™ as a breakthrough innovation. Amongst many new veterinary products and services launched last year, it was Hill’sTM Prescription Diet™ y/d™ Feline that UK vets considered the best new product of 2012*.
