LEADING CANCER UNIT AIM FOR REFERRAL HOSPITAL

A veterinary referral hospital is looking to become a leading cancer centre after the appointment of two senior RCVS registered oncology specialists.

Iain Grant and Mary Marrington have joined Cheshire-based Northwest Surgeons to establish its new oncology referral service.

Both have worked at the University of Liverpool, lecturing in oncology, and are looking forward to the new challenge at Northwest Surgeons.

Iain is a Diplomate of The American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine and is a Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons recognised specialist in Medical Oncology.

Mary is a European & RCVS Specialist in Veterinary Oncology and is interested in all aspects of clinical oncology and haematology. Her main research is in cancer therapeutics in canine and feline patients.

Iain said: “I am thrilled to be joining Northwest Surgeons to introduce this new discipline alongside Mary.

“The aim is to provide a comprehensive, client and patient focused specialist cancer care for pets in the Northwest of England and beyond.

“I’ll be looking to focus on my areas of interest, which are cancer pain management, evaluation of serum biomarkers for lymphoma and comparative oncology.

“This will include examining how our understanding of cancer in dogs and cats can be beneficial to the understanding of cancer in human patients.”

Mary, a graduate of Cambridge University and Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Medicine (Oncology), said: “Iain and I both have experience in the academic environment and have trained many interns and residents in oncology at university level.

“I am delighted that we can bring all this knowledge and experience to Northwest Surgeons. Oncology is such an important service and it will give those pets who are referred to us a quality level of compassionate care.

“We are also hoping to carry out a lot of clinical research in oncology, so we can continue developing this service and provide the best cancer treatment for pets possible.”

As well as providing the new service, Northwest Surgeons are also renovating areas of the hospital to make way for new oncology equipment.

The new facilities include a chemotherapy suite and advanced diagnostic imaging equipment, including ultrasonography, MRI, CT and fluoroscopy.

Specialist veterinary surgeon at Northwest Surgeons, Matt Gurney, said: “This is a very exciting time for Northwest Surgeons. We have a new discipline to offer pets and we have two vastly experienced professionals establishing it for us.

“Iain and Mary have many years of specialist level experience in oncology and are experts in using a multi-modal approach to treat and manage cancer in pets.

“Our new oncology facilities will allow Iain and Mary to accurately assess pets and offer them the appropriate care to help manage and treat their cancer.

“Northwest Surgeons will continue working in collaboration with referring vets and will offer prompt referral for both routine and emergency cancer cases.

“Oncology is a rapidly changing field and we are lucky to have two specialists and new facilities that can offer the most up to date treatments to our patients.

“Our main goal at Northwest Surgeons is to help care for pets and our new oncology service will allow us to continue offering the highest standards of care to all the pets who are referred to us from north west England and across the UK.”
